LERCH Worlds of Indulgence

"I BELONG HERE!"

The challenge is not new; however, it continually calls for new solutions and tailored approaches:the shortage of skilled workers and the need to secure a skilled workforce in the hospitality industry. The family-run Lerch Genusswelten group operates five hotels, 13 chalets, nine lodges, and a campground in the Allgäu region. Rather than relying on the shrinking German job market, Thomas and Angela Lerch, along with their four children and their partners, began as early as 2019 to actively seek out motivated young people in both EU and non-EU countries.

The bureaucratic hurdles and initial language barriers were significant. But today, trainees from Morocco, Indonesia, Tajikistan, Nicaragua, Armenia, Madagascar, and Vietnam are part of the team, bringing new perspectives, cultures, and traditions to the facilities. “This is the right place for me; I belong here”—that’s the promise we make to our guests. And thanks to this initiative, it has long since come to apply to our employees and trainees as well. Now, their siblings, cousins, or friends often apply to work at Genusswelten.

In addition to the two-day Welcome Day, trainees can look forward to a varied training program every week—covering industry-specific topics such as “Cleaning Standards” or “Barista Training,” as well as broader topics like “The Allgäu” or “My Future—What Might My Path Look Like?” There are group events, additional benefits—and company-provided housing.

The jury praised the company’s pragmatic focus on young people, its intercultural approach, its ability to “push through” bureaucratic hurdles, and its highly social approach. What this private company has undertaken and demonstrated can be adapted by many other businesses.
