Wangerland Dike Lights – The Courage to Break New Ground

Wangerland Touristik, LLC

For many years, we northerners, too, have celebrated the New Year with fireworks—but for many of us, this is no longer compatible with our commitment to the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. That’s why, for the past two years, we’ve been calling on visitors and locals alike to gather along the roughly 30-kilometer-long dike line in Wangerland shortly before midnight and, at exactly 12:00 a.m., to light a wide variety of illuminating devices instead of setting off fireworks.

Whether it’s an oil lamp, a wax torch, or a string of lights, the focus is on enjoying the moment together while gazing out at the North Sea. This is a way to ring in the New Year that’s both unhurried and enchanting—a far cry from noisy, environmentally harmful celebrations. And best of all: Guests and locals alike have already taken the Wangerland Dike Lights to their hearts and wouldn’t want to miss it for the world!

Our project deserves to win because it so impressively demonstrates that it’s worth taking bold steps and creating new traditions. Our courage has been rewarded by the fact that the Wangerland Dike Lights has already found a special place in the hearts of our destination’s residents.
