BREGENZ 2024.
Welcome to Lake Constance
Vorarlberg is located in the Lake Constance region, where Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and the Principality of Liechtenstein form a vibrant cultural area. In Austria’s westernmost state, visitors can enjoy the blend of culture, nature, and high-quality experiences. The state capital, Bregenz, lies on the shore of the lake.
VORARLBERG
This state, which measures just 100 kilometers from north to south, stretches from Lake Constance to the Arlberg, Silvretta, and Rätikon mountain ranges. Vorarlberg comprises six regions: the Lake Constance–Vorarlberg region, which includes the cities of Bregenz, Dornbirn, Hohenems, and Feldkirch; the Bregenzerwald; the Kleinwalsertal; Lech, Zürs, and Stuben am Arlberg; the Montafon; and the Alpine town of Bludenz with its three Alpine valleysBrandnertal, the Großes Walsertal Biosphere Reserve, and Klostertal.
Within a small area, Vorarlberg boasts an astonishing variety of landscapes. It features vast plains as well as rolling hills, marshes, forests, river valleys, and high-Alpine peaks. Lake Constance presents a picturesque scene. The festival and cultural city of Bregenz, parks, beach resorts, and the Rhine Delta Nature Reserve line its nearly 30-kilometer-long, freely accessible shoreline. Mountains are always within sight, as two-thirds of Vorarlberg lies at an elevation of over 1,000 meters. Towns and villages impress with their well-maintained appearance. Typical of Vorarlberg is the harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary (wooden) architecture.
Vorarlberg is easily accessible by train from all directions.

ACTIVITIES
Bregenz entices visitors with a wide variety of activities in Vorarlberg’s capital. The atmosphere is one of enjoyment and music, featuring both new and well-known cultural highlights , as well as numerous beautiful spots to discover along the Austrian shore of Lake Constance. Especially in spring, when snow still covers the nearby mountains, you can feel the city coming to life and people being drawn out into nature. On the Pfänder, the city’s hiking mountain, the landscape is becoming noticeably greener. Lake blue and green are the dominant colors in summer. The cultural calendar adds colorful highlights between spring and fall.
Walkers and cyclists enjoy the southern charm and the splendor of the flowers along the shores of Lake Constance. From early April through mid-October, Lake Constance ferries depart from the Bregenz harbor for destinations around the lake. A short walk from the harbor, at the pier, the Sunset Steps are a popular spot for watching the fabulously beautiful sunsets over Lake Constance.
If you want to go higher, take the cable car up to the 1,064-meter-high Pfänder. At the top, you’ll be treated to what is arguably the most beautiful view of Lake Constance and the mountain ranges of Vorarlberg and Switzerland.

CULTURE
An exhibition, concert, play, or festival? Bregenz has a remarkable amount to offer culture lovers. The spectacular lake stage of the Bregenz Festival is considered the city’s summer landmark. The Bregenz Festival Hall is, however, an attractive venue for events of all kinds throughout the year. Its recognition as “one of the three best convention centers in the world” is just one of its many accolades.
Two museums are worth a visit. The vorarlberg museum impresses with its exhibitions and its façade: Over 16,000 concrete flowers adorn the building, which skillfully blends the old with the new. Just a few meters away stands the KUB (Kunsthaus Bregenz), built according to plans by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. The KUB is one of Europe’s leading venues for contemporary art. In several exhibitions each year, a single artist takes over the entire building. The city’s numerous galleries are also worth visiting.

ENJOYMENT
Typical Austrian, French, or Italian cuisine, award-winning dishes, coffee or ice cream, or a cocktail at sunset? In Bregenz, you can easily embark on a culinary journey around the world —with a down-to-earth twist. The chefs source most of their ingredients from Vorarlberg and the Lake Constance region. If you want to get a sense of what’s available, take a look around one of the weekly markets. In spring and summer, there are plenty of opportunities to dine outdoors: right in the heart of the action in the downtown pedestrian zone, in shady outdoor dining areas, or with a view of Lake Constance.
Strolling through Bregenz is a delight. Since 2022, the downtown area has been largely car-free and has become a large, beautiful pedestrian zone. A detour to the Upper Town takes you back in time. There, you can see the oldest houses and sections of the city walls. The city’s landmark towers high above: the Martinsturm with its Baroque onion dome. Exhibitions are on display inside the tower. Sculptures and installations also captivate visitors in public spaces, especially in the lakeside parks. Of course, it’s also nice to browse the small, charming shops. The selection ranges from fashion to specialty shops offering innovative crafts, literature, bread, and sweets.
