CONCLUSION #DCHH19

May 24, 2019, by Wolfgang Weiler

Challenge accepted

After 18 sessions and 6 scenario workshops, the more than 240 participants at the 9th DestinationCamp in Hamburg agreed: "We're up for the challenge."

Shaping experiences, gaining insights, making the most of open spaces —and in this way, step by step, helping to shape the destination as a valued living environment for locals as well. Many of the participants at DCHH19 saw this as the industry’s particular challenges. In an era of increasing digitalization, this also includes data management and breaking down data silos. Likewise, it involves addressing machine learning, artificial intelligence, and their implications for jobs and the destination’s objectives. To achieve this, we must develop joint strategies and join forces.

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.

Market participants can and must address competition in their respective environments or areas of responsibility in their own way, depending on their industry segment and budget.

6 Scenarios for the Tourism Industry

The morning of the third day of DestinationCamp was devoted to presenting the results of Thursday’s sessions. Afterward, the participants split up among the scenario workshops led by the six pairs of facilitators.

During the sessions on the second day of DestinationCamp, participants will explore topics that were identified and organized online in advance. The focus is traditionally on sharing expert knowledge and experiences, learning about new developments, tools, and trends, and identifying the root causes of problems.

In contrast, the scenario workshops on the final day focus on working as a team to explore specific, goal-oriented solutions. The tasks for these workshops stem from the sessions held the previous day.

In the two-hour scenario workshops, the 2019 participants took on ambitious challenges:

  • Together, we are developing a master plan for the DMO regarding open data.
  • We're building THE super app.
  • We envision the DMO of tomorrow from the perspective of vacationers, service providers, locals, and policymakers.
  • How can we develop sustainable, future-proof destinations using today's digital tools?
  • We are developing a communications and media plan for 2025.
  • What does the "sharing, not selling" trend mean for us in the tourism industry?
