As the first German North Sea island in the Wadden Sea National Park, Föhr launched its own sustainability brand in 2020: the local tourism organization, Föhr Tourismus GmbH, developed FÖHRgreen, a recognizable initiative that meets future requirements for identity-building, environmentally conscious, and authentic vacations.

It aims to use tourism as a catalyst to raise awareness of sustainability among visitors and locals alike and to drive forward sustainable changes for Föhr as both a vacation destination AND a place to live. FÖHRgreen businesses actively champion sustainability and serve as role models in the areas of dining, manufacturing, lodging, and experiences. FÖHRgreen serves as an example and guide for other destinations as they launch their own sustainability initiatives.

The term “sustainability” is often abstract and, at times, overused. FÖHRgreen makes it tangible, visible, and experiential, raising awareness among businesses, visitors, and locals about the island’s future as both a vacation destination AND a place to live. After all, sustainable efforts are most successful when we work together.
