The Scheidegger Waterfalls are among Bavaria’s most beautiful natural geosites. The recreational area in the Rohrach Gorge Nature Reserve served as a satellite location for the Lindau Garden Show in 2021. It had previously undergone extensive renovation and was expanded to include Germany’s first geo-adventure trail, which combines traditional explanations with augmented reality experiences.
A dedicated app was developed for the nature trail, allowing visitors to experience the centuries-old geological processes and the formation of the waterfalls through augmented reality. This technology superimposes digital content onto the real-world environment when viewed through the camera of a smartphone. Using the app, for example, fossils come to life in 3-D animations, or visitors can immerse themselves in the virtual Riedbach stream.
Experiencing the geology of the Scheidegger Falls virtually via a smartphone is a key component of sustainable tourism for the future: learning about nature through engaging technology.
