Reliable Forecasts & Effective Visitor Management: AI Can Support Destinations

In recent years, some tourist destinations have begun to measure visitor traffic using sensors and providing guests with, for example, a traffic-light system that displays the current occupancy rate at a tourist destination.

As important as this step was, it is only the beginning. neusta destination.one is convinced of this. In Session 3 of the track “Digitalization with AI," Managing Director Stefan Huber will present how AI-supported data aggregation enables forecasting and how destinations can thereby gain new insights.

From Visitor Counts to Forecasts

To truly support both destinations and guests in their planning and optimization efforts, it is crucial to also develop forecasts for future occupancy rates. The weather plays a crucial role here—both for on-site visitors and for local service providers. A classic example is an indoor swimming pool, which is empty when the weather is nice and overcrowded when it rains.

This is where AI comes into play—with the help of innovative technologies, we can better understand these effects and prepare accordingly: By combining sensor data with historical and forecasted weather data, we can generate reliable forecasts of future capacity utilization.

Visitor Management and Capacity Control

What specific use cases does this lead to? With a“crowd density traffic light” system, destinations can be informed days in advance about when and where large crowds are expected and what alternatives are available. This information can beintegratedinto all digital communication channelsto provide visitors with an optimized travel experience and enable personalized planning.

Service providers such as swimming pools, restaurants, and city tour guides can also use it to promote their Pstaffand resource planning.

Forecasts enable effective resource management

The ability to predict future visitor flows is crucial for destinations. It enables effective planning, improved guest experiences, and optimized visitor management. By using artificial intelligence, destinations can better tailor their offerings to visitors’ needs and make more efficient use of their tourism infrastructure.

This leads to sustainable and improved tourism development in the region.
