Understanding, interpreting, and making targeted use of data

feratel has been using the prototype of its “DMO Performance Monitor” since March 2025. The introduction to the session “How to Succeed at Performance Monitoring” in the Digital Shifts track offers a first look at the new feratel tool.

The basic idea behind the DMO Performance Monitor is not just to collect data, but to present it in a way that is contextualized, interpretable, and actionable. The goal is clear: to enable better decisions through clearly visualized real-time data that supports both operational planning and strategic development.

Broad Base of Structured Data

More than 4,000 Destination Management Organizations (DMOs) in Europe use feratel’s integrated smart destination management solutions, such as Deskline CMS and IRS, guest registration systems, guest card systems, and the PIA guest assistance system. These solutions continuously provide structured data that can be processed using modern data warehouse technologies. Standard reporting options include classic metrics such as trends in overnight stays, booking revenue, ticket sales, visitor data, and performance indicators.

New Requirement: Ability to Make Forecasts

In addition to providing real-time insights, the new DMO Performance Monitor is designed to deliver reliable forecasts, thereby offering greater value for day-to-day management. It was developed in close collaboration with pilot destinations and offers:

  • Day-by-day forecasts for overnight stays, occupancy, and arrivals, including comparisons with actual figures for ongoing optimization
  • Real-time data on guest demographics and guest card usage, broken down by place of origin, age groups, length of stay, distribution within the destination, current visitor numbers, etc.
  • Detailed booking trends with a preview of upcoming arrival periods
  • Market Radar with Insights into the Most Important Source Markets

This is made possible by AI-powered analyses of DMO data sources. At feratel, these include historical data from the booking system—which is connected to 30 booking platforms—availability data from 170 integrated PMS systems with real-time occupancy analyses, and historical overnight stay figures.

Impressive: Forecast Accuracy

The prototype has been in use since March 2025 and has demonstrated impressive forecasting accuracy. In addition to providing real-time insight into the destination’s daily occupancy rates, its added value lies primarily in enabling more reliable resource planning—for example, for ski and hiking buses, restaurants, lift ticket counters, traffic management, and so on.
