AI IN VIDEO – BERNHARD LINGG

AI in video is not yet a convincing concept
With the flood of films, clichés also increase.
In the theme track “Digitalization with AI” at DSTNCMP24 in Bregenz, the question of the future of DMO films also arises. Bernhard Lingg has given this some thought. As a partner at silberstern Filmproduktion in Kempten, he and his crew have been producing numerous award-winning clips and image films for destinations, hotels, and leisure providers for years.
Insights from Bernhard Lingg
Are you still filming, or are you already prompting? AI has entered the realm of moving images, at least since AI pioneer OpenAI generated adorable puppies playing in the snow from a text prompt with “Sora”.
The revolution of the film industry, some say. The ultimate revelation regarding deep fakes, others say. How am I supposed to know if celebrity XY wasn't actually filmed snorting cocaine in the red-light district, if any video can be generated in the future with simple text input?
AI-generated “people” who recite texts in different languages, (almost) lip-sync: Possible. In Spain, the first AI-generated presenter hosts a TV format. Creating your own photorealistic avatar that speaks written texts with my appearance and my voice, in any language: Possible.
Feature films generated with Sora-like images, without being actually filmed: Not (yet) possible, for various reasons.
One thing is certain: It will become even easier to create films in the future. Generally good news. However, this will also lead to an even greater flood of interchangeable, meaningless films. Can real vacation experiences be adequately represented with artificially generated images? Depth, authenticity, values, the special, the truly unique aspects of a region – these will continue to be what sets effective DMO films apart from others. This has always been the case, but it will intensify significantly in the future.
In contrast, various AI applications in video editing are already in daily use and greatly simplify tasks that no one enjoys: Removing pauses and stumbles from interviews, creating transcripts and subtitles, isolating objects. And even AI-generated voiceovers are now more than usable, in almost all languages. That's great and should definitely be used by everyone who creates their own films.
It's like in all areas: AI in video is coming. Or it's already here. Those who don't move with the times will be left behind. But the motto of the hour is: Stay calm. Not every trend currently sweeping through AI-City needs to be jumped on.
