CONCLUSION #DCHH15

April 19, 2015, by Benjamin Buhl

Change starts with us

The takeaway from the fifth DestinationCamp is, above all, a new beginning: locals are becoming guests, destination management organizations are becoming destination service organizations, new metrics are determining success or failure, and there is more creative potential slumbering “under the hood of the tourism professional” than was previously realized.

After five years, one might expect a certain routine to have set in, but this creative and forward-looking workshop was, once again, quite different from those of previous years. The undisputed highlights were the shuttle boat ride through the Speicherstadt and the unmistakable view of the harbor at night during Saturday evening’s dinner at the Altonaer Kaispeicher.

The format itself has adapted annually to the participants’ wishes, thereby renewing itself year after year. This dynamic is certainly one of DestinationCamp’s hallmarks: consistent evolution without losing sight of its origins and its goal.

For that reason alone, this year’s overall conclusion—“Change starts with us”—fits perfectly—all the more so after hearing today’s results presentations. This also sets the task for us until the next #dchh:

Take the initiative!

You can find out how, what options are available, and in which topics in the detailed exhibition catalog, which will be published by the end of June.

When you walk through the ISM tonight after the event has been taken down, everything here feels very empty and lifeless. That’s also because there’s much more “life” in an event like this than you might see at first glance—for example:

  • Over the course of the three days, the 13 Helping Hands collectively took 819,000 steps, which is equivalent to approximately 573 kilometers
  • Richie, the cameraman, walked 23,000 steps—more than 16 kilometers
  • Anne, the editor, watched, cut, and edited 743 clips—and produced nearly 14 minutes of highlights from them ...

These are numbers that make us very proud, but above all, incredibly grateful. So once again, a BIG THANK YOU:

  • To all participants, for your courage to embrace change and your active participation in shaping the future
  • To all our partners and supporters, without whom DestinationCamp 2015 would not have been possible
  • To all the moderators, mind mappers, and experts in the sessions—thank you for your support and input!
  • To Claudia Brözel and Lydia Band for their academic guidance
  • To Andreas Ruthemann for his creatively inspired keynote address
  • To the panel guests: Carolin Ruh, Katja Leveringhaus, Rico Pedrotti, Klaus Hildebrandt, Dominik Kneissl, and Hansjörg Mair
  • To the Silver Stars —Bernhard, Anne, and Richie—for hosting the entire event and the fantastic daily film recaps
  • To Christine Schöler for sweaters, polo shirts, banners, lanyards, signs, ...—basically anything that falls under "printing"
  • To all the Helping Hands, along with Maren and Ilka, for your unbeatable dedication, your input, your willingness to roll up your sleeves, and your focus on finding solutions
  • To Ansgar and Timm from VARGO for music, technical support, sound, and lighting—including their constant stream of fresh ideas for optimization and further development
  • To Panem et Salis for the food and the wonderful evening at the Kaispeicher
  • To Johannes for the professional photos (which will be published in full as a Flickr album over the next few weeks)
  • and to everyone else who wasn't mentioned by name

To wrap things up, here is, of course, the video recap. The third day and the highlights of DestinationCamp 2015 are presented by feratel media technologies & INCERT eTourismus:
